Akon, Calle 13, Julieta Venegas, Kinky, Nelly Furtado and Roemo Santos are just some of the names that La Mala Rodriguez has worked with. It can easily been said that when it comes to Spanish Hip Hop none other, but La Mala Rodriguez has had the stardom and success on the international level that she has had.
She from Spain and rose to prominence in the late 1990s alongside other hip hop artists from Sevillian. She appeared on countless albums by some of the most popular rappers of Spain. Evuentually this would lead her to record her solo debut She with A Jierro/Toma la Traca, a maxi-single released by Zona Bruta in 1999. This was about the time I started taking notice of her. I had a Radio show in San Jose, CA on 90.5 ksjs where I was playing the few Spanish Hip Hop albums that were available as imports in the US.
Then soon after in the year 2000, she signed to Universal Music Spain, and released her full-length debut album, Lujo Ibérico. The album went gold and sold over 50,000 copies. Her second album, Alevosía, was also popular, featuring the single, “La Niña”. Her songs are greatly influenced by flamenco music. Her songs often discuss issues such as poverty, racism, domestic violence, and female empowerment. Her music has been featured of the soundtracks of the Spanish films, Lucía y el Sexo (Sex and Lucía), Yo puta (her songs were used on the movie’s television adverts and trailers), the Mexican film, Y tu Mamá También, and the French film, L’Auberge espagnole and video games like EA Sports FIFA 2006 and Need for Speed: Shift, etc. The list of work she has done goes on and on.
In April 2013 she revealed on her Facebook page that her next album was on it’s way and that it would be titled “Bruja”. It was set to be released on June 18th. Now just a little over a month ago, before LatinRemix went live, on March 28th, 2014 she released her latest music video “Quien Manda” the 2nd single off her album.
